Whether you're looking to work in the security or law enforcement fields, or already work as a security guard, having prior experience of working as a security professional can be a valuable trait for someone interested in becoming a police officer. Although it is not necessary to work in security to become a police officer, you will interact with police officers while on the job. For example, if you work at a hospital, you will regularly interact with police officers. You can even get career advice directly from them. There are also similar competencies between security professionals and police officers such as working as part of a team, conflict resolution and being detailed oriented.

When applying to become a police officer, you'll find that your life and work experiences are key for your application. For those newly graduated, working as a security guard can potentially be solid work experience for your application. In terms of education, only a high school diploma is typically required, with further education in a related discipline not required, but helpful. There are also written and physical tests. Having certifications such as CPR & First-Aid, or employer recognition for excellent performance on the job are things recruiters are looking for. Looking for volunteer positions with police or other organizations is also a great way to display your skills and show you are the right candidate for the job.
